Exercise Before The Pregnancy Is Critical For Healthy Motherhood
The Expectant mothers who are more fit before pregnancy are at a lower risk of developing gestational diabetes, a study suggests. Gestational diabetes is the condition in which women are developing diabetes during the last half of the pregnancy. Women with the gestational diabetes are more likely to create a Type 2 diabetes after giving birth. “Women are conscientious during the pregnancy with what they eat and the exercise they are getting. But the study shows that women should engage in these healthy behaviours before they get pregnant as well.
For the study, publishing in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, the team is analysing data from 1,333 women over a 25-year period from the year 1985 to 2011 who enrolling in a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute study called Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults. The women are completing seven study visits after first enrolling, reporting whether they have become pregnant or gave birth and whether they are developing gestational diabetes.
The researchers are also performing a fitness exam during the first study visit through testing whether the women can walk for at least two-minute intervals on a treadmill at an increasing speed and on steepening inclines. Over the study period, 164 women are developing gestational diabetes.
Using that information, the research team determining that pre-pregnant women with high levels of the fitness have a 21 percent lower risk of the developing gestational diabetes than did that with the more moderate fitness levels.
“The People interesting in becoming more fit can do so through engaging in at least 150 minutes of moderating to vigorous physical activity per week that is 30 minutes per day, five days per week,” Whitaker says. “Brisk walking will constitute a moderate physical activity that is jogging is considered vigorous physical activity,” she adds.
